I go to school on line and need help ASAP. I can not down load anything documents, modzilla, ect. I called my company but they want to charge me 50 bucks lol yeah right so I need ya'lls help. It downloads but I go to start then search and it finds the file BUT it says that they are tring to locate it because the short cut is missing, so when it finally locates it the error says that the shortcut has been removed or changed. which it hasn't. I have tryed everything I went to support.microsoft.com and no help. I have windows vista, I have not changed anything on my computer since my last download..I can not open files either in a nother tab or window on ie. I do not know what to do. Schedule Task Problem ???

I've been trying to schedule backup but it's not starting at all.

I've tried 2 different task, such as opening an Excel %26amp; tha's failed as well. This most likely shows that it's not just the "Backup %26amp; Restore", but "Schedule Task" itself is causing the problem.

In terms of backup, I'm using Windows XP's Backup %26amp; Restore, which I'm using a very first time, I've tried both the "Incremental" and "Normal" but it's still not starting at all.

Backup %26amp; Restore works successfully, if done "now", rather than "schedule" to run later or "daily".

When checking the "Scheduled Tasks" folder (in Windows), it shows in Status as "could not start" and last result as "0x0"

It shows "0x0" as "operation completed successfully", however, that's not the case. This is confusing.

The backup task will only operate if you have specified your start up password. Do you have a password that you have to enter when you start up XP? If not then this is the cause of the problem. Set up a password (using Control Panel, User Accounts) and then enter the password when you schedule the backup task.

J4mes - do you want the backup to run while you are there and watching it - or, perhaps, at some other time so that it doesn't interfere with what you are doing? If you want it to run at some other time (e.g. wake up from sleep mode in the middle of the night and perform the backup - which is what I have my PC set to do) then you MUST specify your XP start up password for it to run. This means that if you don't currently have an XP start up password then you need to set one up.

J4mes - to answer your latest question, I think the answer is 'no'. I haven't seen any option to tell the scheduler to start a task the next time the computer is switched on. Last night my PC rebooted itself before my nightly backup task started and the task certainly did not start when I logged on this morning. It works for your anti-virus software as it is probably managing its own schedule.

For adding a task in scheduled tasks just make your work as a batch file and add it into the scheduled task list. look into windows help for making commandline syntax for ntbackup tool. And try manually if it's working you can start. Also check the pc is powered on while the scheduled time occurs.

Sometimes you have to create the key yourself. Generally the missing disable keys indicate something enabled by default (=0), but it couldn't hurt to add the key and set it.

The image looks exactly right. Restart, change it to 0, restart, test couldn't hurt. If it doesn't help, delete the key you added to be tidy.

I know to get the sum of an odd or even row you do something like this:

But what would be the ideal formula to use if I needed countif to count a number of odd or even rows?

Current I'm using this formula:

=COUNTIF(Sheet3!$A$5:$A$16,D7)

In the above COUNTIF example, I would like to get it to just count the A5, A7, A9, etc... (based upon a criteria on D7), but I'll need it to count the even numbers later on for a different output. Currently, as you can see, it only counts everything in the range.

I've messed around with applying COUNTIF to the above SUM formula example from the help site, but keep getting errors. Please help if you know, thanks!

I think I see what you want but not absolutely sure. I'll give you my fix and you can manipulate any way you want.

I will call a range from A1 to A8 - range "aa". In a blank column C I will type "odd" (not the quotes) in row 1 and "even" (not the quotes) in row 2. Highlight column C from row 1 to row 9 (Whatever you call "aa"). Now click edit/fill/series/autofill/OK and you should have alternating odd/even down col C.

Next in a blank column E put the following in E1:

IF(C1="odd",

COUNTIF(A1,$D$7),"")

And the following in F1:

IF(C1="even",

COUNTIF(A1,$D$7),"")

Now highlight E1 %26amp; F1 to the end of your range (in my ex. down to row 9). Click edit/fill/down.

Now use the SUM formula (in my ex.) at E9 and F9.

E9 gives "odd" row totals and F9 gives "even" row totals.

I maintained the use of D7 as the cell with your criteria.

NOTE: I split the two IF formulas in half so they would show completely on Yahoo. Otherwise the view is truncated. Yo need to type both lines as one formula in both cases.

Everytime i start my other computer (Dell 5100) the it starts out normal but right when the windows loading screen shows it goes to a stop error. 0x0000007B (0xF7C7C524, 0xC0000034, 0x00000000, 0x00000000)This means i can't even get into safe mode or anything. The last thing i did before it crashed was restore the registry from inside Uniblue registry booster 3. Back then the only time i could start it was in safe mode because normally it would load, then just go to black and be completely unresponsive. I've tried to find a windows boot cd, but all i can find is floppy boots from support.microsoft.com however that doesn't work because this computer doesn't have a floppy drive. Computer Stops Responding When I Resume from S3 State in Windows XP.. What's the problem?!?

After that, I got everything back to the way it was before my computer died. I restored my users, fixed the drivers, and reinstalled things like flash and the .net framework.

But when I plug my USB external harddrive in (WD BOOK thing), the activity light constantly flashes. Something, for some reason, is accesing my external HDD. I've run virus checks and the like, and my computer SHOULD already have the drivers it needs, so what's going on?

What is reading or writing to my drive? Anyone have any clue? Oh, and no, I DO NOT HAVE INDEXING TURNED ON. I put that in all caps so I'd be sure you could see it. I wasn't yelling...

Anyway, any thought anyone any any any?

I've gotten that error before, there's usually Norton security pop-up that will ask if it's ok to change the start page back to your default. If tht's not occuring, download a current version of the browser....uninstall the one you have and reinstall the current one. Hopefully that will fix it, or at least give you the security pop-up that allows you to change the homepage.

Running Windows Vista (Ultimate), and none of my VPN connections work suddenly.

This goes to say that I have several VPN connections, and they were each working before and now NONE of them are working.

There is only ONE error # 20227.

After bouncing around the net, I found the following update:

"In Windows Vista, you cannot access any resources on a remote VPN server after you switch a network connection from one network adapter to another network adapter and then dial a VPN connection"

Where as I cant connect to a my local database due to an "Unspecified Error". I've looked at the connection string like hundreds of times and had people check it and they said that there's nothing wrong with it. If you have 1.1 then you don't need 1.0. If you're programming in Visual Studio be aware of the fact that VS 2003 and earlier is not compatible with Vista. Which means that if you are programming against the 1.1 framework, you are using an incompatible prog since only VS 2005 is Vista compatible and it only uses the 2.0 framework. Your HD's space is probably already partitioned, you might wish to try partition magic or software like that.
what OS? Are you booting with a DOS bootdisk? Are you using FDISK, Partition Manager? Give me more details and I will help you out.

Your system probably was never set to have unallocated drive space. Most pcs dont! Like they say...partition magic!
First make sure you have free space left for partitioning.

Go to Disk management and in the right pane look for rectangle with light green bar. This is your unallocated space.

Also look under the label "Disk 0" for the total capacity of your disk. Check if the space mentioned in each rectangle(right side) add up to the total capacity of your HDD.

What do you mean by "boot list?" If you're trying to change the boot order, you can do that in the BIOS. If you're booting to a floppy diskette, of course it's going to say A:\ because you are booted to the A:\ drive! And not many commands work because it is not an operating system. Use the DOS command "CD C:" (no quotes) while in the A:\ prompt. This will get you to the C: drive, and you can then do whatever it is you're trying to do. What ARE you trying to do?!
Do a dir /a:h to display hidden files on your floppy.

You should have these 3 hidden files:

boot.ini

ntdect.com

ntldr

If they are not there then copy them from a DOS prompt:

xcopy c:\boot.ini a: /h

xcopy c:\ntdetect.com a: /h

xcopy c:\ntldr a: /h

OMG..this is like what..the 100th time this blue screen comes up? And to be frank, the computer programs last for about a week before I reformat it again.

This blue screen with the "Kernel_Stack_Inpage" error appears once or two times, and then the next time, it literally shuts off the computer and you can't log in to your hard drive at all. This is when I have to format the computer.

If you are formatting your harddrive and reinstalling windows xp, fresh, each time.. and you are 'still' having the same issues, then it is a hardware problem.

either its the harddrive or the memory or just a glitch in the chip or motherboard.

depending on where you got the computer, you might want to look into some warranty information. compaq and dell have maintenance prices that you can look into for repairs - or you can go to best buy and set someone up with a brand new computer for christmas.

i didn't go to the webpage you attached because it didn't work, but that wouldn't have mattered anyway. those help pages dont tell you much aside from different things to try - and i've installed operating systems for a living.. it gets old reeeal quick.

a blue screen happens when the software loses track of the hardware for whatever reason. most common are the memory faults. after that, is a dying harddrive. then all of the expensive components and the cost increases from there.

do yourself a favor and just buy a new computer. desktops are relatively affordable these days and you wont have to go without a computer for several days while it is shipped to and from whatever company you want to fix it.

The only thing I can tell you is to go to windows updates and you will find on the right side of that page a note talking about pack 2, click on it and see where it will get you. Also, do a thorough cleanup of your system before you try installing pack 2. Another thing that you could do before installing Pack 2, is to download the free trial of Tuneup Utilities and use that program to clean up your registry. The program is very good and it is safe when you let it do the job automatically. just be careful not to get in your registry and do any changes yourself. If those things don't work, you may need to use your original Windows CD to reinstall windows but only the parts tat are missing.

If your pc is infected it will not instal SP2
You need to fix some original system files first before installing SP2. To do this boot up with the original Windows XP CD. Not the first Restore options but... You need to do the R-estore files options and this is the option after the F8 to continue. This option will not delete any files or configuration. This will fix any virused/trojan/adware modified system files. Also dont forget remove any Adware or Virus before installing SP2.
Format your hard drive which your winXP is installed.

If you had a name brand computer such as a Dell the extra drive letter on one drive is usually where the restore information is stored. Another words if you need to reinstall the operating system this is where the computer looks to do so. Also if you went into your system registry and made changes you first need to know that this is treading on deadly ground so be carefull when doing so. One thing you can try is to do a system restore through Windows. Click on the Start button - Programs - Accesories - System Tools - System Restore. Choose "Restore my computer to an earlier time". Pick a date before all your troubles started and click OK. It takes a few minutes for the computer do this action but it might be a quick fix. Don't worry all this does is revert back to an earlier state. All your files are safe. Any programs that were installed or changes made to the system will be undone or uninstalled.

I just got Windows security update 925902, and I started getting this error message:

The system DLL user32.dll was relocated in memory. The application will not run properly. The relocation occurred because the DLL C:\WINDOWS\system32\HHCTRL.OCX occupied an address range reserved for Windows system DLLs. The vendor supplying the DLL should be contacted for a new DLL.

So, I removed the update from add/remove programs from Control Panel. And I was happy that I stoped getting the message whenever I started my computer.

BUT NOT SO FAST. The computer gets the same windows update that caused the problem. So, I went to http://support.microsoft.com/kb/935448 to get a fix. But I received yet another error message that reads like this:

C:\Documents and Settings\Name of computer\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5\LEZ4NAHA\WindowsXP-KB9... is not a valid Win 32 application

Please help!

This is related to the other question you asked a few hours earlier (for other folks, click on Billy Rowe to view his profile, and click on questions to see other questions he asked recently).

You cannot use Roaming Profiles nor a Domain Controller without a computer running Windows NT Server, Windows 2000 Server, or Windows 2003 Server. The Server operating system allows you to set up a centralized database of user accounts (part of a Domain). After creating the Domain, you can use the steps in your link listed above to join computers to the Domain, with the Server acting as a Domain Controller.. Users then log into the Domain instead of each individual computer. This allows you or your Dad to log into any computer.

Without the Server version of Windows, you must create identical accounts on each computer. Simple file sharing on your XP computer (along with enabling your Guest account) may not work as hoped with Windows 2000 computers.

However, did you know that hotmail has new Windows Live Mail Beta? and its free so if you have a hotmail account now you can easily switch it over to beta mail They also have a new Windows Live Messenger beta that is much better than the old one. Its just a thought if you want a beta version of email. Or there's Gmail from Google. That is set up as a beta version or at least it looks like it. I am having the same problem as you! I have a zune 30GB and it does the exact same thing so the advice that i give you is to buy another sync cable cord( you can get it at walmart or circuit city for 20 bucks) i know its not the computer because when i first bought it it did not have any problems so its probably the cord you use to plug ur zune in to the computer.

You need access to another computer to try it on to determine if it's a problem with just your computer, the USB Cable or the Unit. Also, I've unfortunately discovered that the Zune has somewhat strict OS requirements and since it's a Microsoft product, they want you to have all the latest Windows updates and latest Windows Media player, etc. I think the software developers did a horrible job on the Zune software as they are too dependent on OS Items and such. I've had a couple of friends return their units because it was too much hassle trying to get it to work on their PC. What I would do if I were you is return the Zune and purchase a Zen from Creative which has less OS requirements and has better software Definately stay away from the over-hyped iPods!

I just upgraded to IE7--I was waiting for Rhapsody to get on board with the new version. Now that I have upgraded everything is smooth except that I do not see any way to search my Favorites. When I access the Favorites menu I see how to search History but many of the Favorites I have are over a year old and certainly not in History!

I wasn't able to find a solution in support.microsoft.com or ask.com but perhaps I just am not searching for the right key words. I would greatly appriciate any help anyone can offer. I couldn't even find a way for the built in search area in the upper right corner to search Favorites.

My clients computer wz full of viruses so i decided to format and reinstall xp home. After formatting the hard disk, the computer restarts to start the setup right? But when it restarts, i cannot boot from the hard disk in order to trigger the setup coz this is what it says: -

Well for one, if you are using a CD to install Windows, then booting from the Hard Drive isn't gonna do anything for you.. You need to set your boot sequence in the BIOS to boot from IDE/cdrom device.. For another if you were trying to reinstall from the hard drive (copy contents of cd to hard drive and launch inside of Windows) then let me know how you deleted your primary boot partition, you cant Windows wont let you.. You have some confusion going on there, gl.

Hello. I have random program folders that when i click them i get the error, "Access is Denied." The folder says its empty, but i know for a fact it isn't.

I remembered this happened with my AIM folder and once i got the ownership, all the contents of the folder magically appeared. However, i am having trouble getting ownership of this folder. And for some reason the security tab isnt showing.

hi friend ..as i percepted ur question u want to remove the GRUB from ur computer......points fro this :-

i)as long u have the unix based GRUB on ur comp. u can't remove it ..if u do it then u would lose the address of the boot block of all operating systems..

ii)u can delete the unix partinons by going into the

control panel/adminitrative tools/disk manger..

I have a couple of suggestions. First, I'd install a local FTP server to make sure that the problem really is in the code and not in the speed of your network. I've included a link to one server below, but you can find others using your favorite search engine.

500MB seems like a very small amount of data. Are you sure you want to use multi-threading? Could you start multiple copies of your program? If you decide to go with threading, I'd upgrade to Visual Basic 2005 if you don't have it already - I included a link to the free version below.

In VB2005, there's a new component for threading called BackgroundWorker. I've linked to one example of it's use below -- but MSDN has a lot of material on it, including examples.

Absolutely. I work in an all Mac environment, and we use Office for Mac daily.

Only app MS makes that has no Mac version, is Publisher. A dead dinosaur anyway.

Apple also has compatible, and cheaper software like iWork.

No, a Mac will only run Mac applications natively. You can use virtual software like VMWare Fusion to use Windows and Windows software. Also, there is Microsoft Office 2004 for the Mac, but it's terribly slow (in my opinion.)

Well there's MS Office for Mac and for the rest of the apps there's wine but be aware that not too many software can be run under wine

Yes it is possible to run a fairly decent number of MS apps on a Mac. I think wine will run some, http://wiki.winehq.org/MacOSX, but there is a commercial wine application that will run MS on a Mac, it's really easy to install %26amp; configure. Go to http://www.codeweavers.com/

and download crossover office for Mac, there's a 30day trial and the programme will cost you $59.95 to buy, I use the linux version of this and it is very good.

There is a list of supported MS apps including office, photoshop some games and quite a few others, there's a list on the codeweavers site. It is also possible to run unsupported MS apps and some of these run as well as on a windows machine, also a small bonus is that if you install a 30day trial version (in a crossover office "bottle") of a MS app it's possible to remove it after the trial period and reinstall for another 30 days trial and keep doing this.

Even though it does cost $60 it's well worth buying so why not download it and try it out.

I have a laptop with Windows 2000 Pro that can't start up because files are corrupt or missing. I have a Windows XP Pro CD. My computer does not have a CD drive but I found an extra one. It was never installed on that laptop so I don't believe CDs work when I put them in. I ran the boot disks and when I chose to install Windows it said the Setup CD could not be found because the CD drive was not installed. What can I do???? The Registry Repair would do nothing. You need to physically install a CD drive properly, then make sure the boot disk has a driver for it.

After running repair from my xp disc my user accounts are gone and my system restore wont work?

my pc would shut down when i would try to log on so i ran the repair from my xp disc but now my user profiles are gone and my system restore says it cant protect my pc at this time and my nortons wont load and i cant even do a search. my files are still there and my programs but most of them wont work. when i ran the recovery i followed the `instructions from http://support.microsoft.com/kb/307545 and entered the commands i was told but now how do i use system restore to go back to how my pc was before i had a problem if it wont open? Sorry to say you did something wrong,That link was not what you needed to do , messing with the registry will cause your current issue and of course Microsoft doesn't tell you there will be the exact issue you discribed above .You are going to have to reinstall you operating system and drivers and all your software.
